On July 28-29, the VGCL delegation attended the Executive Committee Meeting of ASEAN Trade Union Council (ATUC), held in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia.
The delegation consisted of 3 members led by Mr. Nguyen Duc Thinh - Member of the VGCL Presidium, Director of the VGCL International Department, Member of the ATUC Executive Committee.
The conference was attended by 30 delegates and observers from 18 ATUC member unions and invited guests including the Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation for Asia and the Pacific (ITUC-AP) and representatives of the Workers' Activities Department of the International Labour Organization (ILO ACTRAV).
The conference took place on July 28-29.
In his opening speech, Mr. Andi Gani Nena Wea - President of ATUC welcomed delegates and guests to the Conference and expressed his belief that the active and effective participation of ATUC member organizations at the Conference will contribute to strengthening the organization, making ATUC a true partner of ASEAN on labor in the upcoming time.
Attending and delivering his opening speech, Mr. Shoya Yoshida - Secretary General of ITUC-AP said that in order to build an increasingly better ASEAN, cooperation and dialogue are indispensable, in which, ATUC as an organization representing workers in the region, established in 1984, has always been steadfast in the goal of promoting social progress, ensuring that prosperity is distributed fairly to workers. Ms. Yuki Otsugi - ILO ACTRAV representative also affirmed ACTRAV's support for ATUC's activities in the coming time and highly appreciated ATUC's efforts in promoting its influential role and participation in labor mechanisms in ASEAN.
The contents discussed included: Report on ATUC's activities in the period of 2018-2023 and priority action plan for the period up to 2027; comments on amendments to the ATUC Charter; update information on ATUC's status in the ASEAN tripartite mechanism; update on the situation of the Myanmar Trade Union movement; policy on admitting new members to ATUC, specifically the case of Brunei.
After two days of active and effective work, the Conference approved important contents, including: (1) Changing the abbreviated name of the organization from ATUC to ASEANTUC; (2) Approving ASEANTUC's priority programs for the next 5 years, focusing on the following contents: Continuing to promote dialogue with ASEAN; Program for women and young workers; Program on migrant workers and equal treatment of migrant workers; Promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a just transition; Strengthening the social security system; The future of work, digitalization and precarious employment; (3) Agreeing on the process of researching and proposing amendments to the ASEANTUC Charter to submit to the upcoming Congress for approval; (4) Approving the ASEANTUC resolution supporting the Confederation of Trade Unions of Myanmar (CTUM) and the struggle of the working people of Myanmar to regain democratic power; (5) Requesting ITUC to study and assess the situation of trade union activities in Brunei, providing information for ASEANTUC to consider admitting new members from this country if its activities ensure democracy and independence.
The conference expressed its deepest condolences to the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, union members, and Vietnamese workers on the passing of Comrade General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong. At the conference, Mr. Nguyen Duc Thinh shared some important results of the 13th Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union, the outstanding activities of the Vietnam Trade Union in representing, caring for, and protecting the legitimate and legal rights and interests of workers, contributing to the development of the country.
The Vietnam Trade Union affirmed its commitment to continue to actively and responsibly participate in the activities of ASEANTUC in the coming time to better promote the role of the ASEAN trade union movement in protecting rights, promoting better living and working conditions, and providing satisfactory jobs for workers in the region.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thinh also expressed the gratitude of the leaders of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor to the leaders of ATUC and member organizations who sent letters of condolence on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. The delegation of the Vietnam Trade Union attending the ATUC Executive Committee Conference is an important multilateral foreign affairs activity of the Vietnamese Trade Union, contributing to consolidating and tightening relations with trade union organizations in the region, contributing to the overall results of people-to-people diplomacy.
